Mobility isn't simply about being flexible.
It's about having the movement capacity, control and strength to access the positions you need -whether that's getting low on a wave, rotating through a turn, popping up efficiently, or simply feeling comfortable in your body when you're surfing.
In this practical, education-focused workshop, we'll take a deeper look at what mobility actually is, what can limit it, and how to work out what your body needs.
Rather than giving everyone the same list of stretches and exercises, we'll work through a movement-based framework to help you understand where your own limitations are coming from and what you can realistically do about them.
We'll start with the theory behind mobility and the different factors that can influence how you move, including the mobility ladder - a framework for understanding the different elements that may be contributing to a movement restriction.
We'll then put the theory into practice.
You'll work through a series of movement assessments to help identify where you're currently at and what may be limiting your movement.
From there, we'll look at:
What your movement tells you about your current mobility
The different factors that may be contributing to a limitation
Which areas are most relevant to your surfing and your individual goals
How to identify the exercises that are likely to give you the most benefit
How to incorporate mobility work into your existing training, surfing and work routine
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a much better understanding of your own movement, as well as a personalised starting point for what to work on next to get maximum improvement with minimum time investment.
You won't leave with a 30-exercise mobility program that sits untouched in a drawer.
Instead, we'll identify 3–5 exercises that are particularly relevant to you and your goals, and look at how you can realistically fit them into the routine you already have.
The goal is to make mobility work something you understand and can actually use, rather than another thing you feel like you should be doing.
This workshop will be facilitated by Honu Honi Surf Camp director, Becks, a qualified Personal Trainer and Progressive (Advanced) Surf Coach with over 10 years experience, combining movement and training principles with an understanding of the positions, movements, and demands involved in surfing.
It's suitable whether you're a newer surfer who wants to build a better movement foundation, or an experienced surfer who is seeking more drive, power, and control in your movements.
You don't need to be flexible, fit, or experienced with mobility work to take part.
Come curious, wear something comfortable to move in, and be prepared to learn a lot about how your body moves.
