frequently
asked questions

What level of surfer is this for?
We recommend that you are comfortable surfing in at least 1-2ft unbroken waves, and that you can identify waves coming in towards the beach, as well as features such as rips, currents, and rocks.

Why are the qualifications optional?
This is to allow you to choose what you do and don't want to do. Some people will want to attend the course for their own personal surfing development, while others want to go out and work in the surfing industry as a coach. It also let's those who already have some or all of the required qualifications take part, without additional costs.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

A timed swim and run are part of the qualifications element. It is not a particularly fast past for either, more consistent moving without stopping. We will talk about the fitness required and help you work towards it throughout the course, but if you are completely unable to swim, we may not be able to get you up to scratch in eight weeks in order for you to gain your surf rescue qualification by the completion of the program.

What happens if I can't make one of the weeks?
While we'd highly encourage you to come in person to as many of the sessions as possible, we will do our best to both live stream and record any of the Monday night sessions so that you can participate from further away or watch back a missed session if that helps you better access the course.

Unfortunately we're unable to do this for our practical sessions, but will do our best to give you quick refresher wherever we next see you.

Will I get a job at the end of the program?
The Surf Coast area is home to many large surf schools, all of whom need surf instructing staff from about October to March every year. We can just about guarantee you'll find casual surf instructing work over this period. Full time and part time roles do also pop up, but less frequently. The most likely time for these to start appearing is around the end of our course in late September and early October.

Surf instructing is also a great qualification set for traveling, and it's very common for instructors to work a summer season in Australia, and then head over to Europe or the USA for their summer season. Please note that it is common for these traveling surf instructing roles to request work in exchange for food and accommodation. Please always check if you'll be paid for a role like this, and don't assume you will be. That said, there are many places that pay a good wage, and some that will both pay you and offer food and accommodation.

If you have any questions about the course, please don't hesitate to contact us.
